’An exhibition titled ‘Picture This and Imagine That: The Voyages of St. Brendan the Navigator’ is now on display at Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, Co. Kerry until May 31, 2024, as part of the St. Brendan The Navigator Festival. It features two distinct artists: Daniel De’Angeli and Nora Donnelly, showcasing watercolor paintings and an art installation of sound and projection, respectively.
De’Angeli’s watercolors, inspired by St. Brendan’s Navigatio, were last exhibited over 20 years ago. They evoke simplicity and harmony, reflecting the artist’s deep connection to the Navigator’s journey. Donnelly, moved by De’Angeli’s work, intertwines sound with imagery to create an immersive experience, capturing the essence of the sea, monastic chants, and contemporary life.
Both artists aim to deepen the viewer’s understanding of St. Brendan through visual and interactive means. Donnelly’s installation, particularly, immerses spectators in the voyage, evoking Brendan’s emotions amid stormy seas and calm doldrums.
Supported by Garveys and Muckross House Trustees, the exhibition is open to the public free of charge until May 31 at Siamsa Tíre during regular hours. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the Celtic imagination and reflect on St. Brendan’s remarkable journey.
